Retail theft leads to more charges

Trying to steal a $1.69 bottle of Gatorade from a Tamaqua convenience store proved to be a lot more than a Luzerne County man expected on June 8.

Police were called to Fegley's Mini Mart for a retail theft at 6:39 p.m. after store personnel saw a man hide something in his waistband. When challenged, the suspect took out a bottle of Gatorade, then left the store heading north on Center Street.Officers were unable to locate the man, who was described as a white male wearing a black T-shirt covered with a gray cut-off shirt, a black bandanna and gray sweatpants.Almost one hour later the man returned to the store. Officers found him in the parking lot working on a silver Pontiac Grand Am. He was identified as Patrick Keown, 33, of Plains.A records check found his driver's license to be expired. Keown denied trying to steal the Gatorade, as well as telling police he was just looking at the car for a co-worker, who had locked the keys in the trunk. He was shown the video surveillance footage from the store, showing him placing the drink in his waistband, as well as driving into the store parking lot. When asked if he had anything on him, Keown pulled change and a crumpled lottery ticket out of his pants pocket. Inside the lottery ticket was a white pill. He also had a pill bottle for a Clonazepam prescription containing more white round pills, all imprinted with 54 411, which is the marking for buprenorphine, an opioid used to treat addiction. In total, he had 27 of the pills, some partially crushed, some whole and some cut in half.He was charged with retail theft, possession of a controlled substance and driving with an expired license.
