Walnutport man fulfills dream of riding in Harley sidecar

Two items topped Derrick Werley’s bucket list.

The first, a trip to Walt Disney World, he checked off when he turned 16.On Sunday, ten years later, he attained his second goal of riding in a Harley-Davidson sidecar.Around 75 bikers joined Werley, who has spinal meningitis, in a ride from Keystone Harley-Davidson to Beltzville Bar and Grill for lunch.Werley, a Walnutport resident, has had a passion for motorcycles from a young age, according to his mom Tracy.“He had grown up around them,” she said. “Every time one passes the house, he smiles.”Eric German, a Harley sales consultant caught wind of Werley’s love of bikes and his dream of riding in a sidecar. After a little searching, Roy Steimer stepped forward and allowed Derrick and Tracy to ride in his Harley’s sidecar while he drove on Sunday.“Once we had that setup, I thought why not turn this into an event and get a bunch of riders out here to join him,” German said. “There is no donation, no charity, just a ride to show our support for this young man. I think when we see an opportunity to do something good, we need to step up and do it. I’m tired of seeing all the negative stuff that goes on around us.”From the time Derrick arrived at the dealership Sunday morning, his smile never left his side.Which each person who stopped to say hello, his anticipation of the ride grew by leaps and bounds.“We’ve been trying for years to set this up for him,” Tracy said. “He has been smiling since he woke up this morning. All his life he has watched bikes but has never been able to get on one. I can’t thank everyone enough who has come together to do this for him. I’ve been trying all day not to tear up.”The excitement, however, didn’t stop with the ride. After learning Derrick’s favorite band was George Thorogood and the Destroyers, German reached out to Thorogood’s tour manager.“We were able to get him some merchandise, a signed record, and VIP tickets with meet-and-greet access to his concert at Penn’s Peak next month,” German said. “Just one more thing to try and put a smile on Derrick’s face. When you see that, it’s all worth it.”
