Tamaqua church serves soup to combat hunger

At Saturday's Empty Bowl Dinner hosted by the Outreach Team at Zion Lutheran Church in Tamaqua, participants had the option of purchasing a soup pass that allowed them to select a handcrafted bowl to remind them that families in their community suffer hunger issues.

Fourteen area businesses provided 12 soups, bread, rolls and desserts to sample.All proceeds from the dinner benefit the Tamaqua Community Hunger Walk, which was postponed Sunday due to bad weather.The walk is rescheduled for May 21. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. in the St. Luke's parking lot across the street from the Tamaqua Community Art Center on Pine Street. The walk begins at 2 p.m.Following the walk, an ice cream social and celebration will take place at the art center. During that event, organizations and individuals participating in the annual hunger project will be recognized.Walk registration forms are available at
