Lehighton board sets graduation date

Lehighton will hold graduation on June 9, but the last day for students won't be until June 12.

Three snow days for winter storm Stella forced the district to re-examine its end-of-year schedule. But the district recently asked, and got permission from the state to forgo two days at the end of the school year, because students have exceeded the minimum number of hours of instruction. As a result, students will now have their last day on June 12.After the storm, the school board was concerned that students would be in session through June 14, complicating the graduation date. The ceremony will be held June 9 in the district's new multipurpose stadium. Both June 9 and 12 will be half-days for students.Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said that the district will have exceeded the minimum number of hours required by the state, which is why the Department of Education approved their request. The state allows school districts to use Act 80 in-service days to meet the 180 day requirement, so long as they reach the minimum number of hours of instruction.Elementary students need a minimum of 900 hours - Lehighton will have had 1,062. Secondary students need a minimum of 990 - Lehighton will have had 1,114."June 12 will be our official last student day. Teachers and everyone else will still be required to meet days in attendance," Cleaver said.
