Marian rallies past Haven

Marian's baseball team had the right answers at the right time Thursday against visiting Schuylkill Haven in a Schuylkill League crossover game.

Just when the Hurricanes had rallied for a one-run lead, the Colts promptly hit their way to an impressive five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning.Marian then turned to relief pitcher Ryan Cappel, who allowed Haven to load the bases before he struck out the final batter to preserve a tense 10-7 victory. It was the first league loss for Schuylkill Haven, while Marian pushed its mark to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the league."You're talking about beating one of the 'program' schools," said Marian head coach Tony Radocha, whose team came out of nowhere to win last year's league title. "They are so fundamentally sound. You never have it easy against coach (Scott) Buffington. He is one of the most successful coaches in the state."The 'Canes seemed to be playing coy at times before stroking the fires for a five-run rally that appeared to drain Marian's momentum."We told the kids just to be patient, get one (hit) at a time," said Radocha. "We had no reason to panic; we have quality hitters up and down the lineup. All we had to do is pick our pitches to hit, and we did that."The Colts were poised and immediately created an opportunity to erase the deficit and charge back in front. Danny Keer fueled the rally with a leadoff double. Max Nolter walked before freshman Alex Kubishin slapped an RBI double, setting the tables for Anthony Colleveichio. The senior had struggled, striking out in his two previous at bats, but Colleveichio belted a two-run double to lift his team to an 8-6 lead. Before the inning ended, the Colts posted two more runs on a pair of throwing errors."(Colleveichio) kept saying he was waiting for his pitch to hit, and I have a lot of confidence in him," said Radocha. "I knew he was due for a big hit, and he got it."Starting pitcher Jarod Paisley had things in hand through the first three-plus innings. He retired 11 straight batters after a first-inning error to leadoff hitter Kobe Brish.Schuylkill Haven eventually got to the crafty thrower, who was braking off curves and mixing in a fastball to keep the opposing hitters off balance. With two outs in the fourth, Austin Clouser doubled for his team's first hit of the game. He scored on an RBI single by Brandon Schaeffer. Paisley got the next four outs, but in the sixth, Schuylkill Haven came out with booming bats. The Hurricanes (8-3; 4-1) ripped off five hits, scoring six runs for a short-lived 6-5 lead. Brish had a double, while Clouser, Schaeffer, Josh Kaylan and Dillion Dress added singles, coupled with a Marian error for the lead.Yet that didn't deter the Colts, who quickly regrouped and battled through the adversity."It's a long season, but I like where we are headed right now," said Radocha with a smile.HITTING IT OFF ... The Hurricanes finished with nine, while the Colts slugged out 11, led by Gabe Bauer, Max Nolter and Kubishin with two each. Three players blasted doubles in Keer, Colleveichio and Adam Salazar. Mike Latoff continued his hot hitting streak with another single. Cappel also singled.JITTERY SEVENTH ... Haven loaded the bases in the seventh, getting a single from Nick Yeasted before Clouser walked. After Cappel struck out the next batter and got a flyout, a walk filled the sacks. However, Cappel reared back after running a full count and struck out the final batter on a tough fastball.Sc.
