Coaldale Lions continue annual candy, flower sale

Coaldale Lions Club continues a 15-year tradition with their annual candy and flower sale at the Coaldale Fire Co.

Tulips, mini daffodils, African violets, hydrangeas and hyacinths are available.Hyacinths are the most popular Easter flower, Laura McElheny of the Lions said."A lot of it is tradition, Easter and hyacinths kind of just go together, especially purple hyacinths," she said.There are also candies, all handmade by McElheny. Her chocolate creations include lollipops and "deviled eggs" made of white chocolate.The flower and candy sale is the main fundraiser for the Lions, who help provide eyeglasses for needy people in the Coaldale area.The club also provides two annual scholarships to high school seniors from Coaldale - one from Marian, and one from Panther Valley. The scholarship is given in memory of Dr. Joseph "Corky" Sweeney, a Coaldale native who practiced chiropractic for many years in the Panther Valley.The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday at the Coaldale Fire Co., 121 W. High St. in Coaldale.Coaldale Fire Co. will also be serving its Lenten fish fry from 4-6 p.m. today.
