Fillies, Reinoehl shut out Dieruff

The baseball adage, in this case softball, is that pitching, defense and timely hitting will make you a winner. It sure looks that way for Marian after only three games this spring.

Marian beat visiting Dieruff Wednesday, 5-0, and pushed its record to 3-0.Head coach Joe DeAngelo is quick to remind that his team suffered some tough one-run losses last April and May, and says this time around it could be in for a better twist."We might have a little bit of a chip on our shoulder," said the Fillies' skipper. "And (last season) left a sour taste in our mouths."Not everyone on this year's Fillies team experienced those tough losses last year as DeAnglo ran out three freshmen Wednesday, and all had a say in one way or another in knocking off the Huskies (1-2).Freshman pitcher Lyndsey Reinoehl threw a complete game, allowing four hits. She had perfection in sight through the first 11 batters before yielding a single to Abby Torres in the fifth with two outs, before she was rubbed out trying to steal. As much as Reinoehl was flipping strikes using an off-speed pitch to record seven strikeouts and nary a walk. She also hit a pair of doubles for two RBIs and her teammates collected five other hits, including a double from freshman Emmy Shaud."We've been waiting for some of these kids to get (hits)," said DeAngelo. "As long as they stay focused and patient at the plate, we'll do alright. It's a long season, but a good way to start."Locked in a scoreless battle, Marian finally punched home the game's first run in the third. A one-out walk set the table for the top of the order, where Shaud drilled a double to plate the game's first run.In the fifth, the Fillies rang up a three spot and turned the game over to Reinoehl. The three-run rally started on a single from Miranda Antiga, and Mackenzie Joy singled moving Antiga to third, which brought up Reinoehl. The right-handed hitter drilled a double to left field to plate two runners. After a Reece Erbe sacrifice moved the runner to third, freshman Macy Alansky singled in the game's final run.Reinoehl breezed through the sixth before allowing two hits in the seventh on singles from Jessica Giandobvine and Nylah Reyes. She fanned the final two batters to preserve the shutout."We were hoping to get off to a good start," said DeAngelo, who seems to have gotten his wish. Yet, the coach knew that his team wasn't so sure after being indoors for most of the preseason."You spend a month indoors, you should be able to do the little things," he said.ACROSS THE DIAMOND... Marian catcher Mackenzie Joy is a rarity being a lefty behind the plate. DeAngelo said in softball that is not unique and it can work to a team's advantage. She came close to a pair of pickoffs in the game.GETTING HER SWINGS...
