World War I ceremony Thursday

The Panther Valley Junior ROTC will commemorate the start of World War I by raising a 15- by 25-foot garrison American flag at the Coaldale Complex. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday, exactly 100 years to the day.

The "War to End All Wars" resulted in the deaths of more than 130,000 American soldiers from wound, gassing, and disease. France, England and Germany lost two generations of young men. Twenty million perished. A short 21 years later World War II began when Hitler invaded Poland. Fifty million military and civilians perished.The Panther Valley area "per capita" who served in both wars exceeded the national average by a factor of 2.5. Many gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.Local veterans organizations and citizens are encouraged to attend this flag raising ceremony; which will be held 'rain or shine'.A JROTC cadet will describe the history of our glorious and cherished American flag.William Gaddes, combat decorated Korean War veteran, will give a short address.
