Dogs, cats and rats were among the topics discussed during a lengthy meeting of Weissport Borough Council.

"People are not cleaning up after their dogs," said Council President Gene Kershner.Mayor Jonathan Troutman agreed. "This has been a peeve of mine for a long time."Part-time borough worker Tammy Moyer said dog excrement is found all over the flood levee and on the town's baseball field.Dog waste is even found on sidewalks, council members said. The council said it will direct its chief of police to keep a watch and arrest people who walk their dogs and don't clean up after them.Mayor Troutman said the borough has a leash law for dogs that many people ignore. The mayor said the council should also look into a cat ordinance."There are feral cats all over town," he said. "It's time to do something with these cats."Kershner said he and his wife have captured several litters and personally paid to have them neutered. He said there were some kittens which he and his wife managed to get adopted. When asked by the mayor how much he spent on getting cats neutered and spayed, Kershner estimated it to be about $800.Troutman said he is concerned the feral cats could pose a health hazard.Regarding rats, councilman Arland Moyer said he continues to make sure traps are baited around the community. He said he regularly monitors them for activity. The chief of police will be also asked to take action against a property on Prospect Street on which there is broken glass and other debris. "It's a freakin' mess," Troutman said.
