Plans advance for Gerrity's Market in Chestnuthill

Chestnuthill is one step closer to having a new Gerrity's supermarket at the intersection of Route 115 and State Road after the township granted the conditional use application Tuesday.

The Mount Effort Development Company is planning on revitalizing the existing strip mall at the location of the old Hilltop Market that burned down several years ago.Along with updating the existing buildings, the new owners intend to construct a number of new buildings to bring the total to seven buildings on the property. The plan is to build a Gerrity's Market as the anchor store in the plaza. The market will be over 40,000 square feet in size. The total retail space when complete will be approximately 114,000 square feet.On Jan. 17 Chestnuthill held a conditional use hearing on the amended conditional use application. The board rendered its decision on Tuesday. The township granted the conditional use application subject to 15 conditions. The conditions generally require the applicant to obtain all legally required permits, approvals, and easements. The approval also requires the applicant to obtain final land development approval from the township and that the land be developed in accordance with the approved plans. In addition to the legal requirements, the approval requires that the developer include a bus shelter for the use of the Monroe County Transportation Authority and pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The property owner is also prohibited from placing clothing collection bins on the property."While the requirements of the ordinance may sound restrictive, they are for the good of the community," said Vice Chairman Chris Eckert. "We want to make sure what is there is attractive and will serve the needs of the residents of Chestnuthill."Other businessThe supervisors also approved a one-year lease with Women's Resources of Monroe County to rent one office and shared common space at the Chestnuthill Park building. The space will rent for $500 per month.Resolution 2012-12 was also approved, setting conditions and the dates for banners to be hung over Route 209 to announce special events in the township. Since Route 209 is a state road, the department of transportation requires the resolution.
