NW cruises to easy win

It's tough to overcome having nearly as many turnovers as points in a game. Pen Argyl wasn't able to do that on Tuesday night.

The Green Knights turned it over 27 times and Northwestern capitalized on them as the Tigers earned a 56-34 win in a Colonial League girls basketball game in New Tripoli."That's our game. We are trying to create turnovers in transition," Northwestern head coach Chris Deutsch said. "…We really thrive on creating offense off of our defense. That's really when we are at our best … We focus on it in practice a lot."Leading 12-7 after the opening frame, Northwestern, who never trailed in the game, took advantage of nine straight turnovers from Pen Argyl to start the second quarter. The Tigers went on an 8-0 scoring run during that stretch. The third period wasn't as smooth for the Tigers, according to Deutsch."Defensively, I thought we had a breakdown in the third quarter," he said. "We let that guard for them hit a couple of threes. That is something we need to address. When we go into the postseason and you have a breakdown for two, three minutes, that could be the game."That aforementioned Pen Argyl guard is freshman Megan Lilly, who scored a team-high 12 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc. Sophomore Kelly O'Brien contributed seven points to the Green Knights' offense.Piloting Northwestern's offense were the two forwards in the starting lineup. Junior Leighanna Lister notched a game-high 18 points while sophomore Sage Christopher chipped in 11 markers."I was really proud of the way that we attacked their zone defense tonight," Deutsch said. "They came out in a 1-3-1. Then they played 2-3. I think [Lister] and [Christopher] really work well together and look for one another with high, low passes … They really feed off of each other. I thought they made some really beautiful passes to one another. I was really proud of our execution offensively."The offensive execution continued throughout the second half of the game as Northwestern went on a 7-1 scoring run over the first four minutes of the final period to secure the victory and leave Deutsch feeling good about his team with just two games remaining until the postseason."I think we are playing our best basketball right now," he said. "Going into the league playoffs, I'm confident that we can play with anyone, but it won't be easy. Right now, there is Southern Lehigh and then everyone else. They are the team to beat."SENIOR NIGHT … It was Senior Night for Northwestern as the team honored its lone senior, Paige Stitzel, before the game.PLAYOFFS?!? ... With the victory, Deutsch stated that he believed it clinched a spot in the Colonial League playoffs for the Lady Tigers. Deutsch said that he believes they will be either the fifth or sixth seed in the bracket.LOOKING AT THE RECORDS … Northwestern moves to 13-7 overall and 11-5 in the Colonial League.
