Tigers fall to Slaters

It was senior night in New Tripoli for the Northwestern Lehigh wrestling team, however, it was the squad's youth shining through.

Despite the success of the underclassmen, Northwestern fell to Bangor, 52-22, in a Colonial League wrestling match that lasted less than one hour on Thursday.Coming into the match, Bangor already wrestled 13 matches this season compared to Northwestern, which wrestled only five, but that didn't affect the Tigers mindset before the match."We just wanted to wrestle hard," Northwestern head coach Jim Moll said. "We try to get the guys to wrestle hard and try to get better. We like to win matches and dual meets, but that isn't always the case. We stressed just wrestling hard and getting better."With the match starting at 126 pounds, Bangor (10-4, 5-0) got a pin to take the early lead and the Slaters never relinquished it.The Tigers hung with them and closed the deficit to 16-10 until the match reached the bout at 170 pounds.Starting at 170, every remaining bout was decided by either pin or forfeit, setting up for the quick night in New Tripoli.Bangor gave up just one forfeit, at 120 pounds, to Northwestern senior Baily Wehr, in what was the last bout of the evening.Northwestern lost by forfeit in three bouts, giving up 18 points. The holes in the lineup have been a thorn in the side of the Tigers all season and will continue to be."That's it," Moll said of his lineup. "That is what we have going forward. We have a couple holes. It is what it is."Despite the outcome of the match, Moll pointed out a few bright spots."Isaac Bredbenner wrestled hard," he said."Jackson Bernhard wrestled hard. Caleb Clymer did well. He wrestled hard. The kid came out after him and Caleb responded really well."Another success for the Tigers on the night was at 113 pounds where freshman Harrison Bernhard pinned Jayce Gonzalez in 1:55.It was the lone win by fall for the Tigers in the match. The latest of the long line of Bernhards who wrestle at Northwestern talked about being able to spend his first season at the varsity level with the four outgoing seniors, who are spending their last season on the mat."It's cool to see them go through the program," he said. "I've known a lot of them since I started wrestling. It's been an honor to wrestle with them during their last year."ROAD TRIP... Following Thursday's match, the Tigers hit the road for four straight matches. The next time Northwestern will wrestle in New Tripoli will be on Feb. 9 against Liberty in a non-league match.GOING STREAKING... Northwestern started the 2016-17 season with three straight wins and have now lost three straight matches, with the Bethlehem Holiday Classic serving as the break between the two streaks.CHECKING THE RECORDS ...
