Jim Thorpe sees a drop in crime

Crime is trending down in Jim Thorpe Borough in what the mayor calls a growing relationship between the community and its police department.

Mayor Mike Sofranko released the department's year-end report for 2016 during a council workshop Thursday, noting that officers logged 3,792 incidents compared with 3,957 in 2015 and 4,243 in 2014."What is interesting about it is the call volume to the communications center has increased to 4,488, and I think that is our community seeing suspicious things and letting us know about them so the officers can get out ahead of some of this stuff," Sofranko said.Getting a grip on speeding has been a point of emphasis in Jim Thorpe and officers issued 654 traffic citations in 2016.Under the category of "suspicious persons," officers logged 242 incidents."People have been calling and that is good, because if they see something unusual, police can go find out who the person is," Sofranko said. "It deters a lot of crime before something more serious might happen."Visibility was not an issue for officers in 2016, he added, as miles patrolled totaled 60,549."That is the most I think we have ever patrolled," Sofranko said.Drug charges leveled off at 104 for the year, but several other areas of concern are on the rise including scams.Jim Thorpe labels scams as "flimflam" and officers responded to 43 such complaints."This could be Internet scams, phone scam or email," Sofranko said. "One of the things we want to do is get additional training for our officers in this area."Sexual offenses are also plaguing the borough with 11 taking place in 2016.Sofranko said 2,003 calls took place during the day and 1,235 while the night shift was on duty.
