Two-vehicle crash takes out billboard

At least one person was injured during a crash Tuesday night that took out a billboard along Route 209 in Mahoning Township.

Township Police Chief Audie Mertz said the crash took place at 11:19 p.m. in the 100 block of Route 209 just below the Bagel Bunch.Mertz said the incident occurred when a 2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer driven by Lewis Armbruster Jr., 59, of Jim Thorpe, was traveling toward Jim Thorpe when it lost control on the slippery road and spun sideways.A 2007 Chevy from Lehighton Ambulance Association operated by Gretchen Hendricks, 44, of Palmerton, was coming from Jim Thorpe heading toward Lehighton, he said.Mertz said the ambulance tried to swerve to miss the Chevy TrailBlazer, but in doing so, hit the car on the passenger side, before crossing over off the shoulder and hitting a billboard. He said both people were transported by ambulance, one to the Lehighton hospital, and the other to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest.Armbruster was suspected to have a serious injury, with Hendricks listed as a possible injury, Mertz said.He said the prime factor of the crash is the slippery road conditions. As a result, no citations will be issued, Mertz said.
