LVHN Health Care Partner of the Month

Elissa Remmel

Job: PharmD, Pharmacy Supervisor

Education/Training: Elissa Remmel earned her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences, Philadelphia.

Service line or specialty: Lehigh Valley Pharmacy Services at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Carbon, part of Jefferson Health.

Services offered: Elissa and her Lehigh Valley Pharmacy Services colleagues at LVH–Carbon work closely with clinicians and nurses to ensure inpatients and outpatients, including patients in the Emergency Department and LVHN Infusion Center, receive safe, accurate, and effective medication.

Services include:

• Meds to beds: Eligible patients can have their discharge prescriptions filled and delivered bedside prior to leaving the hospital. This convenient service saves a trip to the pharmacy on the way home.

• Annual flu vaccination support: The pharmacy participates in Lehigh Valley Health Network’s annual flu vaccination drive, helping protect the community from seasonal influenza. Keep your eye out for information about LVH–Carbon’s upcoming flu vaccination drive this October.

• Free medication disposal pouches: Patients can receive free medication disposal pouches to safely dispose of unused or expired medications at home, directly from the pharmacy.

• Medication counseling and education: Pharmacists are available to help LVHN patients, and their families, understand their medications and answer questions.

What you should know: Elissa is extremely proud of her colleagues. They provide medications to inpatients and outpatients from one central location to better serve the community and place patients as their top priority.

“LVH–Carbon colleagues follow the LVHN mission of putting people first, doing what is right, and pursuing excellence,” she says. “While patient safety is our top priority, we also design pharmacy workflows to protect the safety of our colleagues just as carefully.”

LVHN Pharmacy Services at LVH–Carbon was recently recognized for its efforts. Sterile-certified pharmacy technician Jill Los collaborated with sterile compounding pharmacy operations manager Kristen Cosentino, PharmD, to create new safe-handling protocols for chemotherapy medication to prevent exposure. They published these protocols in Pharmacy Purchasing & Products magazine. “Their expertise and commitment to safety are reflected in the published article, ‘Manage Safe Chemotherapy Decontamination,’” Remmel says.
