Colts rout Weatherly

John Patton didn't need to look at the scorebook. He didn't need to look at the stat sheet, either.

That's because it was obvious to the Marian boys basketball coach what he was most happy about after his team's latest win."For once we got off to a good start," said Patton after watching his Colts roar past Weatherly, 72-33, in a Schuylkill League game on Thursday.Marian certainly did get off to a good start against the Wreckers.Running the floor, finding the open man and shooting deftly at times, the Colts dominated from the outset."Weatherly kids always play hard here and they usually shoot very well," said Patton about the Wreckers' gym. "They are very competitive on their home floor."That wasn't the case last night, however. Thanks in large part to a trio of Marian players - Brandon Mohammad, Mark Stauffer and Tyler Fritz - Weatherly never had a chance.Of course, it wasn't only about those three, but the riveting affect they bring to the game, especially on the offensive side, would seem to make this team very difficult to defend.Mohammad, perhaps the best big man in Division III, poured in 17 points and 12 rebounds while also blocking five shots. Fritz, a freshman with a keen eye, drained 17 points equaling his teammate for team scoring honors. Stauffer scored just seven points, but his uncanny knack at the point presents a tough defensive matchup for Colt opponents."You can't help but notice (Stauffer)," said first year Weatherly coach Corey Gerhart. "He directs that offense, they stuff Fritz in the corner and we are chasing him, then the big guy (Mohammad) makes things so difficult in the paint."Marian (3-1, 1-0) stoked the fires for a 26-11 lead to open the game and was never seriously threatened after that. The Colts broke free from an 8-4 score, starting with a triple from Stauffer, a Mohammad putback and a runner off a turnover from Anthony Colleveichio to explode to a 15-7 lead. Before the quarter closed, Colleveichio sank a short jumper, Fritz completed a four-point play with a triple and a foul conversion, Mohammad sank a free throw and Jarod Paisley's drilled a corner trey."We got some easy baskets," said Patton about the early getaway. "That gave us a bit of a cushion and we were able to play from ahead. We create matchup problems with Mohammad and (Ryan) Karchner. And you have to respect Tyler Fritz's shooting. You saw today the way he shoots the ball."Marian started to really stretch things at the outset of the second quarter. Fritz hit a shot to open the period before six free throws and another Fritz triple from the corner made it 37-11.The Wreckers big noise came from sophomore guard Jeremy Moser, who had game honors with 18 points."We started four juniors and a sophomore," said Gerhart. "We are struggling right now, but we're also finding out that we are growing up quickly."SHOOTING STAR ... Fritz was 5-for-10 from the floor and some of his misses were in-and-out. He seldom takes a bad shot and is well schooled.BIG BOARDS ... Marian had a whopping 53 rebounds, 26 more than WeatherlyWORKING WRECKERS ...
