Win streak adds to Lehigh Valley's confidence

A nice, long win streak has added to the confidence of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Against Binghamton Friday night, the team showed a major attribute of that newfound confidence when they repeatedly battled back and eventually won a 4-3 game over the Senators."That's a big difference this season," said Taylor Leier after the win. "Last season, we had a habit of not being able to snap right back when a team got one on us and then it just snowballed from there a lot of times. This season, there's more intensity and more confidence that we can come back and we don't start making mistakes because we're pressing."Lehigh Valley also showed resilience in bouncing back when their recent eight-game win streak was snapped. After the loss, they got right back into the win column and looked to start a new streak. The Phantoms are now on a stretch in which they have won 10 of their last 12 games that temporarily had them in first place in the Atlantic Division. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins regained the lead when Lehigh Valley dropped a game to Hartford Saturday night, while the Pens picked up a key win. Currently, Lehigh Valley (12-5-1-0) stands three points out of first place in the division."I don't think our guys feel very much pressure. They're very relaxed and they know that every time that they go out there, they can win games," said coach Scott Gordon. "We knew we would score some goals this season, so when we get good defense, it's that much easier, but we also know that we can win on offense if our defensive guys do have a down night."The defensive end of the team took a hit recently when goalie Anthony Stolarz was recalled by the Flyers to fill in for injured goalie Michal Neuvirth. That didn't turn out to be devastating at all, since Alex Lyon has been able to jump into the net and pick up where Stolarz left off for Lehigh Valley. The result was a recent streak of seven straight starts for Lyon, who has a record of 6-3-1 on the year."Playing every day is going to make any player better," explained Gordon. "When you have a young player like Alex, it's going to really make a big difference, because they're not used to sitting."The offense hasn't needed too much help, in general, with the exception of a 3-1 loss to Hartford Saturday night. Lehigh Valley's total of 65 goals scored ranks them third in the AHL, behind the Texas Stars (67) and Hershey Bears (66). Jordan Weal ranks ninth in the league in scoring with 17 points, with T.J. Brennan and Taylor Leier right behind at 16 each.STOLIE UPDATE ... Stolarz got his first NHL start and win Sunday against Calgary. Stolarz made 29 saves in the 5-3 win. Stolarz made an immediate mark in the NHL history books when he became the first New Jersey born goalie to play in an NHL game, and is, of course, also the first to get a win.SPREADING THE JOY ... Samuel Morin scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's loss, making him the 18th Phantoms player to score a goal this season. Morin was the Flyers first-round pick - 11th overall - of the 2013 Draft.DEPENDS HOW YOU LOOK AT IT ... While two other teams have scored more goals than the Phantoms, Lehigh Valley still can claim to be the scoring leader, since they have played less games and have the league's highest per game goals average at 3.61 through their first 18 games.
