West Penn Elementary wins recycling contest

West Penn Elementary School has won first place in Schuylkill County's phone book recycling program.

West Penn kindergarten student Gavin Edmonds won third place for collecting phone books, 475. He won $100 for his efforts.Gavin didn't attend the ceremony, held during the public commissioners' meeting Thursday.The annual contest is sponsored by the county Office of Solid Waste & Recycling and Schuylkill Keep It Pretty.Darlene Dolzani of SKIP and county solid waste coordinator Joseph Scribbick presented the awards.West Penn earned $300 for first place, collecting 1,319 books (4.23 books per student); Llewellyn Elementary came in second, collecting 366 books (3.13 books per student) and earning $200; and John S. Clarke Elementary Center came in third, collecting 2,903 books (3.08 books per student) and earning $100.In addition to Gavin, the top students were Clement Doyle Jr., a kindergarten student at John S. Clarke Elementary, who won first place by collecting 1,140 books and earning $150; and Richard Chapman, a second-grade student at Minersville Elementary who won second place by collecting 715 books - and earning $125.Other businessIn other matters, Thursday, commissioners approved the following items:• A $14,863 Hazardous Material Response Fund grant agreement for the county Emergency Management Agency.• Two members of its Incident Management Team, David Carichner and Jeffrey Finlay, with Michael Lessar as an alternate, to attend the 2016 annual All-Hazards Incident Management Team training and education conference to be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Dec. 4-9.• Pronounced Nov. 6-12 as Schuylkill County Farm/City Week.• The resignation of three deputy coroner/investigators and the hiring of one. The people work on a fee schedule. Those resigning were Robert Halye, Minersville; Lawrence Neff, West Penn Township, and Joseph Pothering, Branch Township. Albert Miscannon, West Mahanoy Township, was hired.
