Case against Horvath goes forward

Police testimony from the preliminary hearing of Michael Horvath, who is accused of killing Holly Grim, revealed the likely cause of death for Grim was a gunshot wound.

The nearly two-hour long hearing took place on Monday afternoon, with the introduction of over two dozen pieces of evidence, including forensic reports that indicate that Grim, 41, died of a gunshot wound. A thumb drive taken from Horvath's home in Saylorsburg has also raised suspicion that Horvath, 49, a former co-worker of Grim at Allen Organs in Macungie, could have been stalking her since 2009.After hearing the evidence from prosecutors, District Magistrate Judge JoLana Krawitz ruled that Horvath will be facing charges for the kidnapping and murder of Grim.Horvath's defense attempted to dismiss the kidnapping charge, saying that the evidence did not connect Horvath with the kidnapping and subsequent homicide. The question of a motive for the murder was also brought up, with the defense challenging that the evidence did not show any motivation for Horvath to commit the crime. Krawitz maintained the charges.Grim was last seen on Nov. 22, 2013, after dropping her son off at a nearby bus stop. When her mother, Jeannette Grim had not heard from her, a call was placed to police at shortly after 9 a.m. Authorities believed that Grim had been kidnapped, though at the time they could not conclude that she had been murdered. Grim's remains were found at the home of Horvath in Ross Township this past September.State police trooper Robert Devers explained several forensic reports and DNA tests that matched blood found on Grim's back door with that of Horvath. The investigation of Horvath's property revealed two bones in the ashes of a burn pile that were shown to match Grim's DNA. Devers read a summary from the forensic anthropological analysis of the bones, which focused upon the manubrium, or breastbone."The manubrium exhibits a defect extending through the bone which is consistent with trauma from a gunshot that was directed from front to back, anterior to posterior," Devers said, reading from the report.Rounds of ammunition were found in the vicinity of the bones, and are currently in the process of being tested. The investigation of Horvath's home - described as a that of a hoarder - produced a thumb drive that contained several photographs of the interior of Grim's home from 2009. The thumb drive is currently being tested as well.In addition, the nearly two-week long investigation of the property also revealed videotapes and DVDs related to murder, "human hunting," and sexually deviant subjects, as well as sex toys and pornographic magazines and videos. Handcuffs, leg shackles, and other restraint-like objects, as well as stun guns, were also found. In a previous police interview, Horvath stated that he had only really known Grim at work, and did not socialize with her. He had been to Grim's home on two occasions in the fall or early winter of 2012, in order to deliver a washer and dryer that he had sold to her.State trooper Justin Summa, who was first on the scene when Grim was reported missing by here mother, said that Grim's home did show signs of a struggle. Police found Grim's glasses on the floor of the home. A fresh coffee spill was found on the carpet in the vicinity of the living room coffee table, along with ashes from a nearby ashtray.Neighbor Tammy Seibert, who had seen Grim on the morning of her disappearance, testified that she had heard a sound coming from Grim's home next door, as "if somebody would stomp their foot within their home," after both women had dropped off their respective children at the nearby bus stop.Seibert was not able to determine whether the sound came from in or outside the house specifically.
