Christmas display planned for Weissport community park

Weissport Borough Council heard plans Monday for a Christmas display in the town park surpassing any that locals can remember.

The Beltzville Lions Club plans to hang a half mile of lights, using 350 rebars.Gail and Robert Maholick, members of the Beltzville Lion Club, presented their concept to council and said the installations will occur on Nov. 19.They said the official lighting will occur on Nov. 26 during which the club will have caroling; as well as hot dogs and hot chocolate for sale.Finalization of the plans will be presented during the next council meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 21.Gail Maholick said the Franklin Township Lions Club, which for several years operated a Festival of Lights at the Phifer Ice Dam in Franklin Township, have donated lights for use with the Weissport project.She said the Beltzville Lions will pay the cost for electricity used by the lights."We're trying to make Weissport festive," she said.Lynette Moyer, the borough's tax collector, said the borough will decorate a Christmas tree as part of the festivities.In other business• Some borough officials feel a late fee should be added to garbage bills when the budget is adopted for 2017.Council member Greg May said there are "a lot of outstanding garbage bills" for 2016.Moyer agreed and said some people owe garbage bills for more than 10 years. She said garbage continues to be collected at those residences because of the potential health hazard.• The council praised Chief of Police Denna Krammes for assisting in the borough during trick or treat night last month. Krammes helped children cross Bridge Street, the busiest thoroughfare in the town, and gave youngsters coloring books that emphasized safety.• Krammes told the borough that the person who did lettering on the police cruiser doesn't want to be paid and instead is donating his service to the town. She said Ron Ziegler of Hometown did the work, which the borough estimates would have cost about $300.Ziegler did other work on the cruiser, too, and didn't charge for the service.Krammes thanked Ziegler, who helped put the cruiser into service for the borough at no cost to the taxpayers.• Also praised was Keith Schnell of Schnell's Sides and Signs, who made roof repairs to the borough hall.May said Schnell was the only contractor offering to make the repairs and "they did an excellent job.""They actually did more than they said they would," he said.Borough council hired Schnell of Lehighton last month to do the work at a cost of $950.The work included replacing the wooden eaves on three sides of the roof and capping it with aluminum.The roof has been deteriorating to the point where animals such as birds and squirrels have been getting into holes and making the situation worse.• A special budget meeting of council will be held on Nov. 28.
