Tigers advance to boys soccer final

PARKLAND - Northwestern had all the pressure. But you would have never known it by the Tigers' play.

The District 11 3A boys soccer semifinal pitted top-seeded and undefeated Northwestern against fifth-seeded Southern Lehigh, a team that barely qualified for district play with a .500 record. In addition, the Tigers were seeking a milestone victory for head coach Nate Hunsicker.Northwestern handled the favorite role and the impending milestone without a problem. The Tigers shut out the Spartans 3-0 at Parkland Area High School and in the process nabbed the 100th career win for Hunsicker."We couldn't really sit back on anything," senior defender Josh Bryan said. "We had to keep scoring and keep the momentum going in our favor."We just did not want to let them get through our defense at all tonight."The Tigers, who entered with a 19-0-1 record and a Colonial League championship under their belt did exactly that.Bryan contributed to the victory when he scored Northwestern's second goal off an assist from fellow senior Brad Shafer at the 16:30 mark in the first half.Just eight minutes earlier, a streaking Sam Seyfried cruised down the right side of the Spartan defense. His threat caused a Southern Lehigh defender to commit a tackle that yielded a Tiger penalty kick. Jonathan Blaine dutifully stepped up and pounded it home for the game's first goal."Sam's play tonight was great," Hunsicker said. "His speed was killing them early on. He was just too fast for them and he was killing them on the flanks."The final Northwestern goal was scored by Seyfried with just five seconds remaining.Southern Lehigh (9-9-1), which entered the match off a surprising win over Saucon Valley in the quarters, had the intention of playing spoiler."From both sides, Southern Lehigh had a really good game plan and executed it really well tonight," Hunsicker said. "They kept us off the ball and off the scoreboard at least for a little while."Once we finally cracked them, we were able to beat them with some speed on the outside. But overall it was a really well-played game on both sides of the ball."With each passing game becoming more important, Jonathan Blaine realizes the need for maintaining the high level of success."The team unification is just really good right now," said Blaine. "We're honestly best friends on and off the field and I know where my teammates are going to be, even before they make their runs to get there. It really helps to have that bond and that sense off the ball."With Allentown Central Catholic awaiting it in the finals on Thursday 7 p.m. at Emmaus, the Tigers seem ready for the challenge."We need to bring our 'A' game," Hunsicker said. "They'll be a tough opponent for us, but I think we match up well against them."We do a lot of the same things really well, so it should be a slug fest."REPEAT ...
