Lehighton reaches district finals

Lauren Marks charged down the field with one objective.

Score. When Marks slammed the ball into the back of the cage, it gave Lehighton a 3-2 overtime victory against Pen Argyl in the District 11 Class A field hockey semifinals on Monday."I just had so much adrenaline," Marks said afterward. "Knowing I'm against the goalie and it's just me and her, and if I don't get it … you just know you have to."Marks' score 2:52 into overtime put the second-seeded Indians in the district final and the state tournament. Lehighton will face top seed Moravian Academy, which dispatched Northwestern 6-1 in Monday's other semi."She has an incredible shot," Indians' head coach Karen Wall said of Marks. "And I need her to pull it, slow it down and put it in."Lauren has speed and she does have a good stick. She can maneuver very quickly. We were trying to get the ball up to her to use her speed and use her stick work."Pen Argyl head coach Fran Rowley was well aware of what Marks was capable of heading into the 15-minute overtime period."We knew she was a nice player so we knew we had to be ready for her," Rowley said of Marks. "I even said that in overtime, obviously. She's tough. She has speed, skill."I told my kids exactly how I wanted them to play her and that's exactly what they did; I told my goalie exactly how I wanted her to play her and she (Marks) pinned one in. She did a nice job on that and my kids did what I asked them to do."The fourth-seeded Green Knights forced overtime when Olivia Teel scored with 20:57 remaining in the second half to make it 2-2, bringing Pen Argyl back from an early two-goal deficit.Grace Shanton got Lehighton (11-8) on the board 1:23 into the game, and Melanie Kachmar made it 2-0 with 22:04 remaining in the first half. But a score by Sophia Cesare with just 42 seconds to play before the intermission cut it to 2-1 and gave Pen Argyl (11-9) the momentum in the second half."It was huge, and I said that to my assistant coach, that we had to score before half," Rowley said. "At least get one in before the half so that we can make a game out of it … and see our hard work pay off."After Teel scored the equalizer, Wall worked to regroup - and rejuvenate her squad."We lost the intensity there," Wall said. "But we got it back. We called a timeout - we needed to get them back in and focused."One thing we've been working to be is one cohesive unit. We needed to get back together, and once we came back and played as one, that's when we got it done."Despite losing the early lead, the Indians never got down, as goalie Michelle Bozilesky made several crucial stops to preserve the tie."We knew we had to stay together," Marks said. 'We can't put each other down if one of us makes a mistake. We gotta keep pulling each other up to keep pushing forward to get that win."Playing as a unit helped Lehighton reach the postseason.Sticking together has given the Indians an opportunity to play for a championship."It feels so good," said Wall. "I'm thrilled. I'm just so proud of them today."LOOKING TO REPEAT … Moravian Academy beat Lehighton 8-0 in the Class AA semifinals last season en route to a District 11 championship.
