Eagles top Tribe

The cliche says it's that "it's not how you start, it's how you finish."

But what's wrong with a great start?Blue Mountain scored twice over its first six plays from scrimmage en route to a 35-0 Schuylkill Football League victory against Lehighton on Friday.Ben Kramer got the party started for the Eagles with a 40-yard sprint down the sideline at the 9:40 mark of the first quarter. After an immediate Lehighton three-and-out, Derek Ramussen went 33 yards to the house on the Eagles' sixth play of the game-which gave Blue Mountain a 14-0 advantage just four minutes into the contest."We've been scouting and working throughout the week on plays that we think would work," said Kramer. "The coaches were doing their jobs and knew exactly what was going on and I did what I could with it."After the two quick strikes, there wasn't anymore scoring until the third period.Lehighton chunked the Eagles on two very long drives in first half, but ultimately came up empty.Immediately after Rasmussen's score, the Tribe went on a 16-play drive that ended on downs at the Blue Mountain 16. The Tribe converted two earlier fourth downs during the sequence, which was killed by a holding call in the red zone."Offensively, we're a little dinged up," said Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll. "But I still liked some of the things that we had in place and I give a ton of credit to Nick Skrinkosky."Skrinkosy, who is normally a big playmaker for the Indians at tight end, made his first-career varsity start at quarterback for the injured Cody Scherer. The new quarterback showed a ton of poise in the pocket, standing in tall with confidence during every drop back - but the Eagles' defense never broke. The first half eventually ended when Lehighton came up empty on a 17-play drive which took nearly five minutes off the clock."We're trying to put the best 11 on the field and he's always been a prototypical tight end for us," explained McCarroll. "He's always been taking reps and he knows our offense. We had confidence in what we were doing and we didn't change our offense at all. We run Cody (Scherer) when he's our guy, and I didn't simplify anything for (Nick) tonight and he did a heck of a job."But it didn't take Blue Mountain long to blow it open after halftime.Cramer took a 36-yard run to the end zone on the Eagles' first play after intermission. He finished the game with 147 total yards from scrimmage. Connor Kerstetter and Jack McKivigan both scored in the third frame and the mercy rule was put into effect. The Blue Eagles had 11 different players tally carries. So evidently, a strong start can result in a positive outcome. It did for Blue Mountain on a rainy Friday night."We came in not knowing if their quarterback was playing," said Blue Mountain head coach Cory Mabry. "It took us about a quarter-and-a-half to get adjusted to what they wanted to do offensively. "We made some more adjustments at halftime and our front-three played awesome. We kept our linebackers at home and didn't stunt as much. I think that gave them a little better range to get the cut-backs on that zone they run.GO FOR IT ... Playing from behind, Lehighton converted four of its five fourth-down attempts in the first half.NOT FAR TO GO ... Through three quarters, the Eagles had four separate possessions start inside Indian territory. They scored touchdowns on all of those drives."It's not an excuse, we have to get guys to step up and step in," said McCarroll of his injury-ridden team. "My hat goes off to Blue Mountain, they're a real good team. We're just going to rally back, regroup, and get back on track with a great rivalry game against Jim Thorpe next week."
