Bulldogs rally to beat NW

For three straight seasons, the Northwestern Tigers (4-5) have held on to the Mountain Road Rumble trophy. The Northern Lehigh seniors had enough of the losing skid and won back the trophy with a 21-14 win over the Tigers.

"We got tired of losing to the guys in those uniforms," said senior Austin Hemingway. "This was our year to say that we wanted that back and that we were going to be the better team."A pair of juniors came up big offensively for Northern Lehigh (4-5) in the win, with quarterback Tekoah Guedes throwing for 119 yards and running for an additional 82 yards on the night. Mason Seiler picked up 106 yards rushing on 30 carries and had two catches for 49 yards."We had a number of guys with big games," said Bulldog coach Joe Tout. "Tekoah has been getting better and better, and the big play for us was on that little screen to Seiler, where he put up a perfect pass to get us out of that hole."The play Tout was talking about came in the fourth quarter, with the Bulldogs facing a third-and-14. The screen was disguised perfectly, but Guedes had to float the ball through a couple of Northwestern defenders to get it to Seiler. The play moved Northern Lehigh to the Northwestern 35-yard line. Six plays later, Seiler ran it in from five yards out."We had a couple of plays that really hurt us and that was probably the biggest. We were looking at holding them, making them punt and getting the ball back in good shape, but when they pulled off that play to keep the drive going, that hurt," said Northwestern coach Josh Snyder.Northwestern started the game strong and after stopping a prolonged Northern Lehigh drive that ate up almost seven-minutes, the Tigers went 81 yards on just five plays, with the big play being a 60-yard run by Trevor Cunningham, who moved from his wide receiver spot into the Northwestern backfield for much of the game. With the Tigers up 7-0, Northern Lehigh started its next drive on the 35-yard line, but on the first play of the drive, Guedes was intercepted by Tyler Foster. Northwestern went three-and-out, but the Bulldogs muffed the punt and Northwestern's Caleb Clymer recovered the ball at the two-yard line. Cunningham ran it into the end zone on the next play and in the span of one-minute, Northwestern went up by 14 points. With just under two minutes left in the half, Guedes hit Hemingway with a 23-yard pass and Dan Belfonti added the extra point to make it 14-7."We didn't play real well in the first-half, but we got that touchdown late in the second quarter and we weren't panicking at halftime. We told the kids that we were right where we wanted to be, but we just had to play better in the second-half," said Tout. The Bulldogs tied it with an 11-play drive that ate up over five-minutes in the third quarter when Cameron Kline pushed it in from three yards out."I can't fault our effort at all. Our guys played hard, but we came up on the losing end," said Snyder.WHO'S LEFT TO PLAY?... Northwestern is more than a little banged up. Caleb Clymer and Phillip Dangello left last week's game against Southern Lehigh with injuries. Clymer was back for limited duty, but Dangello wasn't in uniform for the game. Foster left last night's game with a dislocated shoulder, causing Snyder to juggle players around even more.LEAVE IT TO MR. C... Cunningham is the team's leading receiver, but was mixed into the backfield throughout the game and rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries. He also caught the only pass completion for Northwestern on the night, pulling in a 14-yard pass.LOOKING TO THE PAST... The annual rivalry is named after former Northern Lehigh quarterback Bo Tkach and Northwestern running back Brett Snyder. Snyder suffers from ALS, and Tkach suffered from depression and obsessive compulsive disorder before taking his own life. The game benefits the Angel 34 Foundation.
