A kindergarten-plus program is in full swing at West Penn Elementary School.

Tamaqua Area School Board on a 6-0 vote Tuesday acknowledged the program at the school for full days for the 2016-17 school year. Directors Daniel Schoener, Thomas Rottet and Mark Rother were absent.After the meeting, Superintendent Raymond Kinder said the board's action was merely to recognize the program's existence at West Penn Elementary."The K-plus classroom at West Penn Elementary is designed for students that have (been) attending our half-day kindergarten program, making great strides during that year," Kinder said. "However, these students require further intervention and support, necessitating an additional year of kindergarten to reinforce the skills they will need to progress to grade 1."In other actionThe board approved the following:• Ann Rolko, Joelle Simmons and Kathleen Williams as full-time custodians.• Ellis Beibleheimer, John Kruczek and Anthony Staivecki as substitute custodians.• Michelle Bittner as a West Penn Elementary grades 3-5 liaison teacher.• Jamie Little and Lynn Zancofsky from part-time paraprofessionals to full-time paraprofessional, effective Oct. 19.• Cheryl Donovan as a full-time paraprofessional, effective Oct. 19.• Gail Miller as a part-time paraprofessional.• Mary Kocha and Mary Van Blargan as substitute paraprofessionals.• Victoria Billbe, Ashley Longo and Amber Phillips as substitute professional guest teachers.• Andrea McLaughlin as a part-time cafeteria monitor.• The resignation of Cailee Bittner as a substitute paraprofessional, effective Sept. 26.• The agreement with the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 for provision of special education services for the 2016-17 fiscal year for a tentative amount of $404,116.• Authorization for the business manager to participate in the Pennsylvania Education Joint Purchasing Council's bid process for the 2017-18 fiscal year for general, paper, art, maintenance, custodial, commuter, food service, heating fuel and athletic supplies.• Authorization for the business manager to participate in the E-rate program for the 2017-18 funding year and to execute agreements as necessary for timeline compliance subject to future ratification by the board.• Appointed Portnoff Law Associates as the district's delinquent real estate tax collector for unpaid taxes from the 2016 collection cycle.• The first reading of the naloxone policy.• The district's comprehensive plan.• The professional salary schedule.• The service personnel staff salaries.• The athletic coaches and extracurricular salaries.
