Pleasant Vy. eliminated from EPC playoffs

ALLENTOWN - Kills and blocks can change the dynamic of a match.

On Tuesday, Allentown Central Catholic excelled in both avenues during the Eastern Pennsylvania quarterfinals against Pleasant Valley.Dana Roberts led a ferocious Vikettes' attack during a sweep of Pleasant Valley, 25-7, 25-12, 25-14.Central Catholic jumped out of the gate with a 4-0 lead in the first set and only yielded seven points during an impressive opening sequence."At this point, I think my players are really playing well," said ACC head coach Laurie Corcoran. "They're strong right now. They're playing together right now."The Bears had a brief one-point advantage in the early stages of the second set.But that's when Roberts made a huge impact. The Vikettes' star slammed five kills during the second set, as Corcoran's squad opened up a comfortable lead. Roberts finished the match with 14 kills, while teammate Rachel Hess added nine."Last year she was an outside hitter," said Corcoran. "This year, we needed a strong middle hitter. She is really being dynamic at that position. If she gets up there quick, nobody is going to stop her. She's one of our best hitters."The Bears came within four points of ACC in the final set, but the Vikettes proved to be too strong on both sides of the net.Six-foot-one senior Olivia Rudjord had five blocks for Central Catholic, and was one major factor that kept the Bears from thriving offensively."Our defense is pretty relentless for the most part out there," said Corcoran. "This group of girls have a lot of fun, and that's a big characteristic of them. There's no real pressure on them, and they just go out there and play the best that they can."Pleasant Valley head coach John Gesiskie wants his Bears to flush the loss out of their system. Right away."We're gong to have the next two days off, but I want them to get volleyball totally out of their mind for now," he said. "I told them to hit the weight room or get on the bicycle. Come Friday, we'll go hard through all of our drills. It's one of those things where you want to taper off, but not too much that you get stale."Noel Kelly led Pleasant Valley with five kills and seven digs. But ACC's offense was too much to handle at the end of the night."I'm happy with the way we are playing. It's a shame. We have a lot of seniors and we're still working on a lot of fundamentals and things like the blocking," said the PV coach. "Overall, we're doing well. Our next step is districts. We are still not sure whom we will be playing because of the new alignment, but that'swhat we're looking forward to now."JACK OF ALL TRADES … Fittingly for ACC, the match ended with a powerful Rudjord kill. She finished with a final tally of five blocks and seven kills.BIG BATTLE IN WHITEHALL … ACC (13-3) will next take on Freedom (16-0) on Thursday at Whitehall. ACC and Freedom played one set in a tournament this year, and ACC won, 28-26. ACC fell twice to Parkland and once to Emmaus this year.FIRST TIMER … PV's Jasmine Van Spanje got her first varsity action as a setter on Monday. Teammates Cameron Caffrey had six assists, while Andrea Janak had five assists.DISTRICT PREP ... To help stay fresh, Pleasant Valley will scrimmage PM East.
