Palmerton library plans quilt show, concert, classes

Quilts to concerts, the Palmerton Area Library has several events planned for October.

The 10th annual Quilt Show will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the library. Besides the displays of beautiful new and antique quilts, there will be vendors, door prizes, contests, demonstrations and more.The show is sponsored by the Sew What Quilt Guild, which meets monthly at the library. To exhibit a new or antique quilt, contact the library at 610-826-3424.Quilts can be brought in any time the library is open.The Palmerton Area Library Concert Series will feature Rhonda Kline and Sherry Freund for the fall concert, "Better Together, 1 Piano/4 Hands." The duo will play "Overture to the Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart, "Hungarian Dances" by Brahms, "Witches' Dance" by MacDowell and three additional classical and light opera pieces.Kline is artist-in-residence and director of accompanying at the University of Washington School of Music in Seattle, where she works with Freund as collaborative pianists. Freund is retired from teaching college and lives in the Palmerton area.The concert will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 upstairs in the Knights Gallery. It is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.Need help with homework? The Homework Helper program resumed on Sept. 26 at the library. The program is staffed by volunteer tutors for students in first grade through eighth grade. It is held every Monday and Wednesday after school during the school year. It's free, but parents must register each child ahead of time. For more information, call the library and ask for Marian.Here are some other interesting happenings at the library:• Computer Classes held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdaywith "Intro to Computers."• From 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 1, "Excel/Word/PowerPoint" will start.Class size is limited, so call now for either of these classes. Participants may bring their own laptop or use a library laptop.• Story hour for preschool children - 10:30 a.m. every Friday at the library during the school year. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer reader for story hour, please contact the library. Story hour is free and open to all.• Handcrafted Items Auction - Nov. 4 through Dec. 2. We are looking for donations of quality handcrafted items (knitted or crocheted items, quilted items, jewelry, wooden items, dolls, Christmas items, etc.) If you have items to donate, bring them to the library by Nov. 1.• Calendar Lottery Tickets - To purchase a ticket, check with any board member, Friends of the Library member or the Check-Out desk. www.palmertonarealibrary.com. The library has six computers for the public to use, free Wi-Fi, faxing, copying and scanning services. It is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
