Nesquehoning looking into health plans

Nesquehoning officials are continuing their investigation on what their best option is for employee health coverage.

On Wednesday, borough council tabled action on approving an insurance broker after Joe Pilla of ETA Benefits, which is located a block away from the borough hall, approached the board to ask council where it was with the process.Nesquehoning has been looking at changing health care providers from the Benecon Health Insurance Cooperative because of escalating costs.Borough secretary RoniSue Ahner said that the board met with two brokers and had been prepared to vote on hiring one that evening, but Pilla asked if they would meet with him before making a final decision."I don't feel you may get the best advice from other brokers," he said, noting that he feels Benecon is a long-term solution for the borough, even though it doesn't look like it now.He said that going with an insurance provider like Blue Cross may look appealing now, but the lower rate may be increased after the first year and warned that Nesquehoning may then be stuck and unable to get back into Benecon.Council said that it will entertain Pilla and meet with him before taking final action.Nesquehoning, in June, voted to send a letter to Benecon, notifying it of the borough's intent to possibly terminate their contract at the end of the year.Nesquehoning officials must now secure coverage by Dec. 1 to allow for no gaps in coverage. In other matters, council approved payments of $120,161 and $15,874 for its 2017 minimum municipal obligation into the uniformed and nonuniformed personnel pension fund.
