Hurricanes hold off Marian

Schuylkill Haven quarterback Danny Lozada doesn't get to throw the ball much on offense.

But he made one of the biggest plays of the year in the fourth quarter against Marian on defense. The Colts had possession and were trailing by a 10-6 margin with just over two minutes remaining in the game. However, Lozada jumped an out-pattern on first down and took a 20-yard interception to the house. His heroics helped clinch a Haven victory in a Schuylkill League defensive slugfest, 17-6."I know they're a good passing school, so I thought they would pass in that situation," explained the Hurricanes' top cornerback. "I tried to hide myself because I'm short and it worked to my advantage. I thought finally, I got my bone and I just had to go for it."It took over seven minutes before either team picked up a first down Friday night.Dawson Evitts broke the ice with a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter to kick things off for Haven. But on the ensuing drive, Marian's Ethan Kuczynski scampered for a 24-yard score after some nifty moves, which put the Colts ahead when the first period ended.Unfortunately for the Colts, Kuczynski's run would stand as their only double-digit gain on the ground throughout the contest."They're relentless, that's our phrase," said Schuylkill Haven head coach Mike Farr of his defense. "We want to play defense that way and we have to keep attacking and attacking. The key for us though is for him (Kuczynski) to not handle the ball. We wanted to force him to give it to someonefelse because he's their best player and it's obvious."The Canes' stuck to their notorious blueprint and scored on the ground later in the second quarter. Tailback Mike Kalyan ripped off a 44-yard run with three minutes left before intermission. The chunk got Haven down to the red zone, where Preston Gehring cleaned up and punched in the go-ahead score at 10-6.Both defenses continued to impress in the second half.Marian's Matt Stanziola kept the trend going when he used every bit of his 6-5 frame to block a 38-yard Canes' field-goal attempt. His effort kept the score at 10-6 midway through the third."Matt played very well last week and is really becoming a force for us," said Marian head coach Stan Dakosty. "He's a great kid and both him and our defense played a great game."In fact, both teams combined for just 71 yards of offense across the final two periods. The longest play belonged to Lozada and his 20-yard interception return.Zach Falls, Nick Erbe, and Stanziola were everywhere for the Colts, while the Kalyan brothers and the rest of Haven's front-seven were disruptive at the line of scrimmage."We're in a 3-4 attack style," explained the Haven coach of his defensive scheme. "We're always bringing five, you just don't know which ones are coming. We're just going to keep attacking downhill. We have two great middle linebackers that are about the surest tacklers in the area so we're not afraid to come."There were just a few minutes left after Lozada's pick-six. Marian trailed by two scores on the ensuing drive. It was fittingly ended by a Shawn Davis sack to close out the game."We're going to zero in on our next game and have an intense week of practice," said Dakosty. "We'll be ready to go against our arch-rival Panther Valley. We're going to work hard to be a good football team, we're right on the edge right now."We went through a five-week meat-grinder and we're right there, all we have to do is crack that ceiling."CRUSHING COLTS ... The Canes' were great defensively, but Marian's front-seven was also stout. The Colts held Haven to just four runs of double-digit yards across 42 carries. "We hate to lose," Dakosty said. "But when you stop hating to lose, you shouldn't be here, right? When you get that kind of effort, especially defensively, you can't ask for more as a coach."FINALLY ... Evitts' field goal in the first quarter marked the first time that the undefeated Hurricanes have scored in the opening period this season. They're yet to score a touchdown.
