Supervisors agree to shelve Andreas Road culvert project

A plan to address the Andreas Road culvert has been put on the shelf for the time being.

That's after the township's board of supervisors agreed on a 2-0 vote, with an abstention from Supervisor Tony Prudenti, to table the matter at last week's meeting.A letter was received from the Department of Environmental Protection stating that the permit package has been withdrawn because it had expired.Supervisor Tony Prudenti expressed his dissatisfaction to Jeff DeAngelo, of Alfred Benesch Engineering, the township's engineering firm."You guys didn't respond to DEP in a timely manner," Prudenti said.In June, township officials met with a representative from the Department of Environmental Protection as part of a site visit at the culvert. At that time, township officials said a bridge may eventually be installed on Andreas Road because it has to handle a 25-year storm, and the pipe that is there does not handle that. However, supervisors previously said they have never seen that pipe overflow, and that the idea was to come up with a cost-effective plan that also promotes public safety.Supervisors said the cost of the bridge was unknown, that they will likely incur extra expenses with the project, and that it could become a multiyear project. That site visit marked the second time township officials conducted an on-site visit at the culvert.Township officials were told previous estimates to install a box culvert would cost somewhere between $350,000 to $400,000.However, supervisors said that water continues to go down the pipe, and questioned the need for such a costly proposition.
