Schuylkill domestic dispute results in murder

A domestic dispute in Kline Township on Thursday turned deadly with one person dead and another sitting in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville.

The Schuylkill County Communications Center in Pottsville received a 9-1-1 call at 3 p.m. Thursday from Jane Schreiner, 69, of 101 Hillside Road, McAdoo, in regards to a domestic dispute, saying she just shot her husband during an argument.When officers arrived, they found Kenneth Schreiner, 56, lying on the kitchen floor with a single gun shot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Deb Detweiler at 4:45 p.m.Jane Schreiner was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, murder in the first degree, murder in the third degree, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime and reckless endangerment.She was arraigned before District Judge James Reiley and placed in the prison as only the Court of Common Pleas may set bail in a murder case.The case is being investigated by Pennsylvania State Police from the Schuylkill Haven barracks.The preliminary investigation notes Jane Schreiner called the 9-1-1 center twice between 3 and 3:15 p.m. The first time, she told dispatchers she shot her husband, then hung up. She called back to say she only meant to scare him and didn't know the revolver was loaded.The revolver, a .38 caliber Smith and Wesson, was found on a kitchen countertop.Jane Schreiner told police she and her husband had been arguing about her family. He was screaming and yelling obscenities, which embarrassed her because the argument could be overheard by neighbors. She also told troopers the family insults were an ongoing matter and that she usually just went to the bedroom and avoided contact with her husband.This time, she went and sat on the back porch. She was followed by her husband, who continued to yell and scream.She went back inside. He followed. She warned him she was going to get the gun from the night stand. He continued. She went to the bedroom, retrieved the gun and went back to the kitchen. He laughed. She pulled the trigger and then called 9-1-1.A virtual autopsy was scheduled for Friday by Schuylkill County Coroner David Molyan and a forensic autopsy will be conducted at the Reading Hospital.Jane Schreiner is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. Aug. 16 before District Judge Stephen Bayer in Tamaqua.
