Delegate: DNC chairwoman's resignation 'was right decision'

Debbie Wasserman Schultz's decision to step down as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee after the party's convention "was the right decision," Dwayne Heisler, a Democratic convention delegate from Columbia County, said Monday before the convention began.

Heisler was elected in the April primary election as a delegate pledged to Bernie Sanders. Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation Sunday, following the release of emails showing her staff favored Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, during the primary despite vows of neutrality."I have seen the Bernie and Hillary teams working together over the past two days," Heisler said in an email. "We have work to do and together we will present the most progressive platform in our country's history."Heisler is one of six delegates from the 11th Congressional District. It includes most of Luzerne County; all of Wyoming, Columbia, Montour and Northumberland counties; and parts of Carbon, Dauphin, Perry and Cumberland counties.Grace McGregor Kramer, a Clinton delegate from Scranton, said, "it is clear from discussions with most Sanders delegates on the floor that we are ready to unite as a party."During the convention's first hour, Sanders supporters repeatedly booed and chanted, which resulted in a reaction from Clinton delegates and a deafening roar.Kramer said "almost all of the boos" were coming from Washington, Oregon and Oklahoma delegates."All the other states are chanting 'love trumps hate,'" she said in an email.Kramer is one of seven delegates from the 17th district. It includes parts of Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, including Scranton and Wilkes-Barre; all of Schuylkill County; and areas in Carbon and Northampton counties."The DNC is working to unite to ensure that all members have a voice and are engaged in the process," Kramer said.
