Driver in Monroe head-on collision facing DUI charges

A driver whose vehicle crossed a double yellow line and traveled in the opposite lane of travel before colliding head-on with another vehicle is facing charges, including driving under the influence and aggravated assault by vehicle.

State police at Lehighton said the crash occurred at 5:06 p.m. on Tuesday along Route 209 near the intersection with Route 534 in Polk Township, Monroe County.Troopers said Darren Suchon, 48, of Kunkletown, was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta southbound when he crossed the double yellow line and entered the northbound lane.Troopers said he continued in the opposing lane of travel and then crashed head-on into a 1999 Subaru Forester driven by Kimberly A. Mitchell, 43, of Brodheadsville.The impact caused the Subaru to be pushed back across the southbound lane and into the parking lot of the Kresgeville Deli, where it struck a parked 2000 GMC Sierra. The Jetta came to rest on the shoulder of the northbound lane facing southeast.Mitchell sustained a major leg injury and was taken to the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, troopers said.Her passenger, Travis W. Beers, 40, of Kunkletown, sustained a moderate injury and was also taken to PMC.Suchon was not injured.Troopers said Suchon was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI of a controlled substance. Troopers said charges have been filed against Suchon.Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the West End Ambulance and Polk Township Fire Company.Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
