Lansford settles suit with chief

Lansford Borough has come to an agreement to settle a lawsuit with its retired police chief.

John Turcmanovich, who led the borough's police department between 2008-2014, had filed a lawsuit arguing the borough deprived him of pension contributions based on time that he used sick leave and vacation time.Council approved the settlement agreement by a 4-2 vote this week. Matthew Walsh, Colin Jones, Joseph Butrie and Jared Soto voted for the agreement. Council President Martin Ditsky and Rose Mary Cannon voted against the agreement. Turcmanovich, who was elected to council last year, was absent.Details of the settlement agreement were not immediately available. A trial in the case had been set to begin on Friday.Turcmanovich filed the suit in September, 2014, just a few months after his official retirement from the force. The case centered around whether Turcmanovich was entitled to benefits calculated on the inclusion of compensation, sick, vacation and personal time. The borough had argued that its pension ordinance specifically excluded sick, vacation and personal time.Turcmanovich argued that the exclusion of those benefits did not apply to officers hired before 1993.Turcmanovich retired from the department in May 2014, after six years as chief. He worked for the department since 1974.Council president Martin Ditsky said he was glad the case was satisfied."I don't like lawsuits. The joke around town is, 'Move to Lansford and you can sue the borough,'" Ditsky said.
