Tamaqua Area School District will apply for disaster relief as the result of the January winter storm.

The school board's Finance Committee agreed on Tuesday to authorize administration to execute required forms and documents for the purpose of obtaining financial assistance under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.Students recognizedAlso on Tuesday, the board recognized a pair of elementary students as Students of the Month.Recognized for the distinction were Anna McCabe, a fifth-grader at Tamaqua Elementary School, and Grace Kinder, a fifth-grader at West Penn Elementary School.Other action• The board's auxiliary committee approved the "Healthy Smiles, Happy Kids Dental Van" contract with the district for the 2016-17 school year at a cost of $9 per examination.• The board's education committee approved the request of Caitlin Miller, speech therapist, to attend a conference, Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display Multi-Modal Communication Strategies for Children Who Have Complex Needs, May 5-6 in Annapolis, Maryland.• The board's education committee agreed to place a resolution on the agenda for the board meeting on Tuesdayto approve an affiliation agreement with Capella University for field experience in the 2016-17 school year.• The board's finance committee appointed Berkheimer, of Bangor, for a two-year and nine-month contract effective April 1, 2016, through Dec. 31, 2018.• The board's finance committee approved the sale of a parcel located at 0 Gold Road in Rush Township for the purchase price of $924 to Jerry G. Adrey, Jr. of Mahanoy City.
