Nesquehoning police report new scam hitting area

Nesquehoning police want residents to be warned of a new scam hitting the borough.

Police chief Sean Smith said he received a report about the scam around Christmas, and noted that the new scam is similar to being a mystery shopper.According to the email instructions sent to the person, a cashier's check in the amount of $4,500 was delivered from Virginia. Of that amount, the person was instructed to cash and deposit the check “at your bank immediately and complete the assignment as directed.”The assignment calls for the person to complete three surveys of companies in the area, which include Kmart, Walmart and the post office. It instructs the person to purchase any item worth $100 from the Kmart location, which you keep; and also deduct $400 for your commission. At Walmart and the post office, the email states the “reaming” balance should be used to purchase two USPS money orders and two Walmart money orders in the amounts of $990 and $3,960, bringing the total the person would be scammed out of to $5,450.Those money orders are then supposed to be sent to another “mystery shopper” in Connecticut via UPS or FedEx within a certain timeframe and the name of the recipient left blank “encase the mystery shopper on board is already on another assignment due to holiday/delay.”Anyone who receives information or a check from this scam, should report it to borough police by calling 570-669-9111.
