The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met twice during October, furthering plans designed to help the community.Patti Burke served as hostess for the Oct. 7 meeting, which was held at Two Kings Pizza in Hometown. The program, which was presented by Burke, provided a number of interesting facts about the common cold as well as ways to avoid catching and spreading germs.Cathy Santee hosted the Oct. 27 meeting at her home in Orwigsburg. The program centered on a guest speaker, who shared information about her German heritage.The chapter is collecting nonperishable food items and clothing to benefit the Tamaqua Salvation Army and local veterans' families.Cheer adviserThe Tamaqua Area School District is looking for an assistant cheerleading adviser. The coaching position is for the winter 2015-16 season. Vice President Nancy Gerber conducted the business session and Ruthann Feane offered the invocation "Quiet Blessing."The group discussed the annual Christmas party, which is scheduled for Dec. 3 at the Y. Refreshments will be provided by A and C Catering.The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 12, at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.The group is open to anyone 55 or older and the YMCA is handicap accessible.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church.
