Pipeline facilities could be coming to an area near Jim Thorpe Area High School, borough officials say.

Council members recently heard a request from UGI to erect a "peak-shaving" station on borough-owned property near the high school.John McGuire, borough council vice president, brought the proposal to Jim Thorpe school officials at Monday's school board meeting.The peak-shaving station would be a storage area for natural gas, providing additional gas in the line when it is in heavy use. For about half the year, it would be turned off. But during the winter months, when demand for energy is high, the unit would power on and feed gas into the pipeline to keep it pressurized.The site is on borough-owned property near Jim Thorpe High School. The station would consist of two trailers fenced in, and possibly a concrete pad. McGuire said that the trailers would be Department of Transportation-approved, with little chance of a leak of gas happening.He also pointed out that the project may have the ability to neutralize a stormwater problem that has existed at the school since it was built in 2000.Residents of Germantown Road have asked the borough to address water that has been flowing onto their property during heavy rainstorms, seemingly coming from the school's property.McGuire said that if the peak-shaving station is built, UGI could help to pick up some of the tab for a new detention basin aimed at preventing that water from running off the property.
