Lehighton man struck, killed

A Lehighton man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle during a hit-and-run Sunday in the borough.

Officer Robert DeFuso said the incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. in the 100 block of South First Street.At that time, DeFuso said Vincent John Smith, 64, of Lehighton, was struck by a pickup on First Street.The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, DeFuso said, noting that two witnesses followed the pickup and advised the Carbon County Communications Center of its whereabouts.Borough police were able to make contact with the driver, Jennifer Roxanne Coleman, 44, of 15 N. Shore Drive, Albrightsville.Coleman was taken into custody.Police were later notified the victim had passed away.The incident remains under investigation, said DeFuso, who added that anyone with information is asked to contact borough police.An autopsy was scheduled later today.Coleman was charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence; accident involving death of personal injury, accidents involving personal injury while not properly licensed, and flight to avoid apprehension, trial or punishment; driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance; reckless driving; homicide by vehicle; and involuntary manslaughter.She is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility.This isn't Coleman's first brush with the law.In April, Jim Thorpe Police stopped Coleman as part of a routine traffic stop during an aggressive driving detail on Route 903, which led to a large drug discovery.During that incident, Coleman had 15 prepackaged bags of suspected crack cocaine, 10 bags of suspected heroin and several items of drug paraphernalia.Police also seized over $11,710 in cash from Coleman's purse.Coleman, at that time, was out on bail for other drug charges.
