Maria Casey wins Schuylkill County clerk of courts seat

Schuylkill County First Assistant District Attorney Maria Casey has won the race for clerk of courts.

Casey, a Republican, won handily over Democratic challenger Catherine Mahon for the seat, vacated when Democrat Stephen M. Lukach Jr. retired under a cloud of suspicion of fiscal mismanagement.Democrat Tom Campion was appointed in September 2014 by then-governor Tom Corbett to fill in, but did not seek election to the post.Casey had 15,649 votes to Mahon's 11,731, according to unofficial returns.There were 48 write-in votes.Register of willsIncumbent Register of Wills/Clerk of Orphans Court Theresa Santai-Gaffney bested two rivals to keep her seat for another four years.Gaffney, a Republican who made national news when she challenged a Pennsylvania judge's ruling granting same-sex couples the right to marry, faced off against Democrat Frank DiMarco of Walker Township, a political newcomer, and Independent candidate Jerry Labooty of Branch Township, a Pottsville restaurateur.Gaffney had 13,145 votes, launching her to a second term; DiMarco had 10,055, and Labooty 5,098.There were 12 write-in votes.TreasurerIn the race for treasurer, Republican Linda Marchalk of Tamaqua won over Democrat Brett Clark of Pottsville for the seat, which was vacated when longtime treasurer Jacqueline McGovern retired.Marchalk had 15,710 votes to Clark's 12,092.There were 42 write-in votes.Recorder of deedsVoters elected Republican Ann Dudish of Pottsville, The wife of the late Recorder of Deeds Matt Dudish, to her first full term in office.Dudish ran against a political newcomer, Democrat Gina Warhola of Branch Township.Dudish got 17,890 votes to Warhola's 10,104.There were 17 write-in votes.ProthonotaryIn the race for prothonatory, incumbent Republican David Dutcavich kept his seat with 16,983 votes. His Democratic challenger, Leo Securda, won 10,937 votes.There were 21 write-in votes.County controllerCounty Controller Christy Joy, who ran unopposed for a second term, won 23,657 votes.There were 215 write-in votes.District judgesTwo district judges were seeking new six-year terms and both won in the primary by capturing both nominations.David A. Plachko, of Port Carbon, got 4,282 token votes while Anthony J. Kilker, of Shenandoah, got 2,262 for his re-election.State officesThe only state races were for seats on one of the state's three high courts.Supreme Court: The most hotly contested race was for three open seats on the Supreme Court. Schuylkill votes split among the seven candidates. Democrat Christine Donohue, currently a judge on the Superior Court, won the county with 13,396 votes. The other two top vote-getters were Republican Judy Olson with 13,218 and Democrat Kevin M. Dougherty with 12,545. The other vote totals had Ann Covey (R), 12,494; Mike George (R), 11,561; David Wecht (D), 11,074; and Paul P. Panepinto (I), 2,554. There were 77 write-in votes.Statewide the three Democrats - Donohue, Dougherty and Wecht - won, switching control of the state's highest court to the Democrats, 5-2. Donohue has local ties. She is a native of Carbon County and a graduate of Marian High School in Tamaqua.In the other state judgeship races:Commonwealth Court: Republican Paul Lalley got 14,374 and Democrat Michael Wojcik got 12,471. Wojcik is the statewide winner.Superior Court: Republican Emil Giordano 13,946 and Democrat Alice Beck Dubow 12,951. Dubow is the statewide winner.- Den McLaughlin contributed to this report
