Infant dead; fire breaks out at Lehighton home

A 7-month-old girl died this afternoon at the scene of a fire at 266 S. First St., Lehighton.

Carbon Coroner Bruce Nalesnik said an autopsy will be performed Saturday to determine the cause of death Nevah Hoffman.

Police are not releasing many details.

The child's mother was home at the time that the fire broke out in the multi-family dwelling.

The fire appeared to be in the upper part of the house, but the origin is not known. A dog was tied to a tree when officials arrived.

The fire was called in shortly before noon. Responding were Lehighton, Mahoning and Franklin fire departments, Lehighton ambulance, the Carbon County dog warden and Lehighton borough and state police.

A state police fire marshal is investigating.
