Burglary suspect arrested after manhunt
A Lehighton man who fled police on Wednesday when they surprised him as he was building a shelter in Mahoning Township has been arrested and arraigned for stealing a $400 chain saw he says he planned to sell on Facebook for drugs, food and a place to stay.
Mark J. Dacosta, 33, of 502 Cypress St., is charged with felony burglary and criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking, and receiving stolen property. The charges stem from a burglary Dacosta is believed to have committed in February at a Hemlock Drive barn.He is jailed in Carbon County Correctional Facility under $3,000 cash bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Mahoning Township patrolman Tyler Meek, here's what happened:At 12:45 p.m. Feb. 20, he received a call from a man who told him Dacosta worked with him cutting trees on Feb. 18. They put a chain saw, valued at $400, in the barn. The saw was last seen at about midnight that night. The next day, it was missing. The barn owner saw footprints in the snow, and a man followed them from his barn to Orioles Drive. He then contacted Dacosta on Facebook and confronted him about the chain saw.Dacosta admitted stealing it on Feb. 19, and has not returned the saw.On Aug. 27, Meek found out where Dacosta was living and arranged to interview him the next day.On Aug. 28, he met with Dacosta at the police station. Dacosta waived his Miranda rights and agreed to talk with Meek.Dacosta admitted going into the barn and stealing the saw. He told Meek he tried to sell the saw via Facebook for drug money, food money and a place to stay. But while he was living in the woods, Dacosta told the officer, someone stole the chain saw. It's unclear why Dacosta remained free. A warrant was issued Tuesday for his arrest in the chain saw burglary.Police received a report at about 11 a.m. Wednesday that a man was trespassing on wooded property at 1290 Upper Nis Hollow Drive. The man, later identified as Dacosta, was working on a structure in the woods on the side of the Mahoning Mountain.Police used an SUV to search the steep, rocky area for Dacosta. They found a wooden structure under construction, a four-wheeler, homemade stove, tools, a cellphone, and another disassembled structure.During a check of the area, Meek saw Dacosta lying in the woods. He fled as police approached to surround him, fleeing down the mountain into a heavily wooded area on the south side of Route 443, said Police Chief Audie Mertz.During the search, someone from Route 443 Flower Tent reported a man fitting Dacosta's description had crossed Route 443 and headed into Lehighton borough. Police also searched the area behind the car dealerships on Route 443. At one point, scanner reports indicated Dacosta was heading toward the Lehigh River.Several departments responded to the search, as well as the helicopter from the Pennsylvania State Police. On Thursday, Lehighton borough got a tip that Dacosta was in a house there, and went to the home and got him, Meek said.A check of court records shows that Dacosta has been arrested in other theft cases.
