Hauler in West Penn sludge spill was from New York

Details about the hauler that spilled thousands of pounds of treated sewage sludge along Route 443 in West Penn Township Wednesday morning, has been released by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Colleen Connolly, community relations coordinator for DEP, said that Jackell Transportation of New York was hauling the sludge from Clear Flow Technologies sewage treatment facility in New York with the final destination being a landfill in western Pennsylvania when for the tractor portion of the rig detached from the truck, causing it to overturn and take down a utility pole.Connolly said it is unknown at this time exactly how many pounds of sludge was spilled on the road and an neighboring property and DEP is currently waiting for a report from the hauler.Specialized crews were out cleaning up the mess throughout the day Wednesday. The road was closed for the majority of the morning and early afternoon.Connolly said a notice of violation may occur, depending on the findings of an investigation by West Penn Township police.Attempts to reach West Penn Township police for additional details were unsuccessful.
