Group seeks grant help

An organization in Palmerton that has staged the Christmas in the Park event has asked borough officials to seek grants to help further its cause.

Joe Federanich, of the Christmas in the Park committee, along with his wife, Marj, and committee chairwoman Michele O' Neill, appeared before borough council on Thursday.Their request, Joe Federanich said, is simple: To have the borough look for grants to pay for underground lighting for the park.Federanich said the group was told the borough has to be the one to apply for the grant.O'Neill said there were 69 trees lit up at last year's event. As of now, the group has the capability to go up to 75 trees, she said.Borough manager Rodger Danielson said the borough would look into the matter. The group's visit comes one week after organizers of the event said they are in need of more assistance and fresh concepts.Last week, the committee held an open meeting at borough hall to invite anyone who would like to help the group out.O'Neill said the third annual Christmas in the Park event is tentatively scheduled to be held from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 5. The rain date is Dec. 6.Last year's event was sponsored by the Aquashicola and Palmerton fire departments, as well as the Palmerton Pool Pals.Along with the lit trees, the event featured Christmas carols and wagon rides. The event debuted in 2013 in the borough and featured 48 decorated trees from members of the community.
