Chantilly Goods in Weissport celebrates opening

Chantilly Goods, Weissport's newest business, will be holding a special deal on Saturday to celebrate its recent opening.

The vintage ice cream parlor and general store, which opened two and a half weeks ago, will be giving a free in-store soda with any purchase of ice cream from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.The shop sits on the corner of Bridge and Allen streets, where Reed's Market was until 2010. Jay Frey of Lehighton bought the building in 2012 and decided to reopen the store, but also add an ice cream parlor to revitalize the location. "We're doing all of this for the town. We want to create good experiences and memories for the kids who come in here like their parents and grandparents had in stores like this," Frey said.Jay, who is also a manager of Service Construction Company, put in extra time with his wife when they were not working to fix the building up. "We did all of the construction after hours. Almost everything in here was replaced," Frey said. The majority of the renovations were done with local material. "Everything but the tin roof is from the area," Frey said. The wooden railings and doors, which date back to when the building was founded in the 1870s, were pulled from the old meeting chamber on the shop's upper floor. The bar and tabletops are made of chalkboards from the Bunker Hill School in West Weissport. Chalk is available for kids to draw on the tables. The shop's soda fountain is an authentic one built in 1940, which came from an old soda shop in Pottsville.Even the ice cream is local. The frozen treat comes fromManning Farm Dairy in Dalton, which was chosen by Frey for a specific reason. "ManningDairy is one of the last places to completely produce their ice cream from start to finish. It comes out very thick and buttery. It's absolutely delicious," Frey said.Chantilly Goods offers 23 flavors of ice cream, along with custom-made ice cream cakes and ice cream pies. The soda is prepared the old-fashioned way, with different syrups to choose from and served in vintage soda shop glassware. There are a total of 18 different flavors that can be mixed in any combination. An old-fashioned candy store can also be found at Chantilly Goods, filled with classic sweets, along with a grocery store carrying real dairy milk, bread, eggs, snacks and other convenience items.Jay also opened a laundromat in the back of the building called Weissport Washboard with the intent of giving members of the small community a closer place to do laundry. "Now instead of sitting around and waiting for your wash to get done, you can throw it in, go up front and have a drink or ice cream while you wait," Frey said. The brand-new efficient washers and dryers can finish a load of laundry from wash to dry in 45 minutes. Also included are oversized washers and dryers for extra large loads.Chantilly Goods has only been open for a short time, but Jay has seen positive results since the opening and is hoping that Saturday's deal will put the shop on the map. "I didn't know how it was going to go, but so far we've been doing well," he said.Chantilly Goods is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, and the Weissport Washboard is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.For more information, like the shop's Facebook page, "Chantilly Goods & Weissport Washboard."
