Man is sent to state prison on theft count

A former Carbon County resident was sentenced to a state prison term on Thursday on a theft count.

Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced Ryan Rehrig, 35, of Scranton and formerly of Lehighton, to serve 15 to 36 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of criminal conspiracy-theft.Rehrig was arrested by Mahoning Township police for incidents at the Walmart store. Police said Rehrig, and others, cashed fraudulent checks at the store. Six checks were cashed for a total of $2,366. He was one of three charged in the incident.Rehrig has an extensive criminal record and admitted to a drug addiction problem. Rehrig had gone through several drug rehabilitation programs. He was in a Salvation Army program when he was kicked out for violating the rules.After leaving the Salvation Army program he did not report to the probation office as required. The probation office then moved to revoke him from a probation term he was serving on other charges.Before sentencing Rehrig, Matika conducted a probation revocation hearing and found him in violation.On the probation violation Matika resentenced him to serve three to six months, with the condition he must serve the full six months. The term is concurrent to the theft charge.Matika said the state system offers the best opportunity for Rehrig to address his drug addiction problem. He noted is failures in trying to address it in rehab programs outside the prison setting.In addition to the jail term Matika ordered Rehrig to get for drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, supply a DNA sample, when released on parole render 100 hours of community service, make restitution to Walmart for $788.57, which his one-third share of the total due, and pay court costs of about $1,000.
