Man gets state prison for knife-threat to wife
A former Carbon County man who threatened his wife with a knife and terrorized her family was given a state prison term on Thursday in the county court.
Kenneth Robert Kondash, 37, of McAdoo and formerly of Beaver Meadows, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve a total of 49 to 108 months in a state correctional institution. The prison term is a year and a month longer than the plea agreement with the district attorney's office recommended at the time of the plea hearing. At the time of the plea, Matika warned Kondash he did not have to go along with the plea agreement at the time of sentencing.Kondash previously pleaded to counts of burglary, aggravated and simple assault and disorderly conduct in two pending cases.Kondash was charged for an incident on Aug. 4, 2013, at the home of his estranged wife, Brianna Paulshock in Beaver Meadows.State police at Hazleton said Kondash entered the home and confronted Brianna Paulshock while she was asleep with her 7-year-old son. He pointed a knife at her throat and wanted her to leave with him. He told her they were "going to die that night."Paulshock refused to go and pushed Kondash into a bathroom. Paulshock managed to call her mother, Kelly Paulshock, for help. The mother came to the aid of her daughter.A struggle ensued with Brianna Paulshock managing to grab the knife and not let go. Kondash began to bite her arm.Paulshock's brother, Andrew Paulshock, then arrived with a shotgun and told Kondash to stop biting his sister. The struggle continued with Kondash continuing to bite her arm.Andrew Paulshock then hit Kondash on the head with the butt of the gun.Kondash then stopped biting his wife and struggled to get the gun away from Andrew Paulshock. The gun discharged at least twice during the struggle. Kondash eventually fled the home and was later arrested. At the time of the incident Brianna Paulshock had a protection from abuse order against her husband which was issued three days earlier. On Thursday Kelly Paulshock read a statement to the court stating that she felt Kondash came to her home to kill her daughter. She said the incident has deeply affected the entire family. She added that she still has nightmares over the incident.Kondash also pleaded to charges stemming from an incident on June 1, 2014, in Tresckow involving Richard Porpigilo as the victim.Porpigilo said he was seated in his truck when Kondash approached him. He said as he was going to leave Kondash struck him in the head causing injuries. Some of those injuries are permanent.Defense Attorney Robert S. Frycklund told Matika that his client is remorseful for what happened. He said Kondash suffers from a mental health condition for which he is seeking help. He added,"He takes full responsibility for his actions."Kondash at first declined to speak, but later said, "I apologize to the victims. I'm seeking help."Matika said, "I believe from what I had read and heard, that you planned to kill her that day." He added, "Your actions were premeditated."Matika said no sentence he could impose will ever help the Paulshock family to have a normal life again. He said, "They will be haunted by your actions that night."The jail term will be followed by three years of state probation. Kondash was also ordered to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, make total restitution of $4,468, pay court costs of about $1,000, and have no contact with any of the victims in both cases.Kondash, who has been in prison since last August, was given credit for 311 days already served on the charges.
