Schuylkill hires food company, dietitian

Schuylkill County's Office of Senior Services now has a company to provide group and home-delivered meals, and a registered dietitian to make sure older folks have nutritious food prepared in clean kitchens.

County commissioners on Wednesday chose an Illinois company to provide the meals for three years at a total price of $1,467,882.That comes to $489,294 a year through 2018.Preferred Meals Systemsof Berkeley was the lowestof two bidders for nutritionservices.Preferred Meals Systems offered to provide meals at $3.69 each for both the group and home-delivered meals.The company's price per meal is 6 cents less than the competing bid.Commissioners opened the bids last Wednesday.They also approved a three-year, $26,250 fee-for-service contract with Scarlet Stout of Berwick for 750 hours of registered dietitian services at $35 per hour.The price comes to $8,750 a year.In other matters, commissioners renewed a five-year lease agreement between the county and James McAndrew for a building at 33 S. Main St., Shenandoah, which houses the district judge offices.The lease begins July 1 and expires June 30, 2020. The rent is $2,083 per month, which is $11.36 per square foot.In a related matter, commissioners also renewed a five-year lease agreement with McAndrew for 2,288 square feet of storage space at the same address.The storage space is divided among the district justice, Adult Probation, and Juvenile Justice at 112 square feet, 650 square feet, and 1,526 square feet, respectively.The total monthly rent is $590, which is $3.10 per square feet. The lease term begins Aug. 1 and expires July 31, 2020.Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved changes to a contract with Burke & Burke of Shenandoah.The first change increases the contract by $20,250 for a revised cap of $31,500 for legal services in fiscal year 2014-2015.The second adds revised standard terms and conditions, effective as of July 1.
