Judge hears county drug-related cases

A New York resident pleaded guilty to drug dealing on Tuesday in Carbon County court and was immediately sentenced to a county prison term.

Muhammad Calderon Muriel, 37, of Bronx, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-marijuana before Judge Joseph J. Matika.Matika immediately sentenced Muriel to serve six to one day less 24 months in the county prison.Muriel was arrested following a vehicle stop along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township on Feb. 12. State police at Fern Ridge stopped Muriel for speeding, 80 mph in a 65 zone. At the stop police conducted a vehicle search and found marijuana in plastic baggies ready for sale.Muriel has a prior conviction for drug dealing that occurred several years ago. He told Matika, "It was a big mistake. I made a foolish decision."In exchange for the plea the district attorney's office did not seek the mandatory sentence provision, which meant Muriel could have been sentenced to a minimum of 24 months in a state prison.In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered Muriel to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, zero tolerance for D&A use, and render 100 hours of community service when released on parole.Other pleasOther defendants who entered guilty pleas in drug-related cases included:Stephanie Marie Weirich, 39, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana.She was arrested on March 9 by Lansford police after they responded to a domestic dispute at 315 E. Abbott St. While on scene officers found marijuana, which Weirich admitted was hers.Matika imposed a fine of $300.David A. Penberth, 45, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.He was the other half of the domestic dispute involving Weirich. On scene police found a pipe used for smoking marijuana, and Penberth admitted it was his.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he render 25 hours of community service.Marion KennethTaylor, 25, of Williamsport, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana.He was arrested on March 30 along I-80 in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge following a traffic stop.Matika imposed a fine of $300.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
