Free community safety day planned for May 2

Carbon County families, are you looking for something fun and educational to do on May 2?

The annual Carbon County Community Safety Day at Mauch Chunk Lake Park will meet everyone's needs. The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the beach area of the park and will be held rain or shine. On Thursday, the county commissioners adopted a proclamation proclaiming May 2 as Safe Kids Day in Carbon County. To honor the day, Kid Zone Blue Mountain Health System, state Sen. John Yudichak, the commissioners, Carbon Lodge 242 Free and Accepted Masons and the Nolan Ritchie Stay Afloat Foundation are hosting a one-stop-shop for all things fun and educational.Mindy Graver of Kid Zone, who has been one of the organizers for the event since its inception in 2007, said that the day will focus on safety and ways to prevent injuries and death in children.Last year, more than 20 agencies, 15 fire companies, two medical helicopters and a water rescue team converged on Mauch Chunk Lake Park to talk with families about a variety of safety topics."The important thing is getting the education that so many things could be prevented," Graver said. She added that it will also be special this year because in addition to the regular activities, the group will be honoring military families and veterans of the community.Bill Richards of Yudichak's officer said a presentation honoring Sgt. Major Daniel A. Dailey, the Army's highest ranking official and a Palmerton native, will kick off the event."We feel there is no better way to explain safety to someone than to have our backs covered by the military," he said."We are honored to have the most honored Army non-commissioned officer in the United States coming. It will be a really good day."Following the opening ceremony, children and their parents will be able to learn about topics such as animal safety, bicycle safety, fire safety, water safety, personal hygiene, car seat safety and more. There will also be games and other activities throughout the day.The event was previously known as the Carbon County Fun-N-Safety Fair and held on Fifth Street in Jim Thorpe, but after a number of successful years, the event outgrew the location. In 2013, Yudichak partnered with the groups and the event was moved to its current location at the lake.Since 2013, the Community Safety Day has grown in size and popularity with families and is made possible through business donations and dozens of volunteers.
